What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a 5,000-year-old Healing Art. It is an effective form of medical treatment that has evolved into a complete holistic health care system.

Acupuncture promotes natural healing. It can enhance recuperative power and immunity, support physical and emotional health, and improve overall function and well-being. It is a safe, painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.

Qi (pronounced "chee")

At the core of this ancient medicine is the philosophy that Qi, or Life Energy, flows throughout the body. Qi animates the body and protects it from illness, pain & disease.

Pain or illness results when the flow of Qi is interrupted or blocked. Acupuncture's purpose is to stimulate, disperse, and balance the flow of Qi throughout the body within the meridians.

Once the imbalances of Qi are detected, the Acupuncturist will place fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints along the meridian pathways. This safe & painless insertion of needles can unblock the obstruction and re-balance the body's Qi.

Qi will then freely circulate throughout the body, providing adequate nourishment to cells, organs, glands, tissues and muscles. This can eliminate pain and restore balance and harmony, as well as the body's ability to heal itself - ultimately leading to optimal health and well-being.

Western scientists explain it differently. They say inserting needles at acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release morphine-like substances that block pain signals. It may also trigger neurotransmitters and neurohormones, which influence such dynamic systems as circulation and the immune response.

In the Cosmetic Acupuncture realm, the belief is that the shallow insertion of needles just into the dermis will cause micro-trauma that induces the body's natural production of collagen & elastin. This results in the disappearance of fine lines and wrinkles as the skin is "plumped up" naturally from within.

Other techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine may also be included with your treatment.

Cupping uses warmed jars that create a light suction when applied to the body. Its purpose is to reduce local congestion of Qi and blood. Cupping is especially helpful for painful obstruction syndromes.

Moxibustion involves burning the herb mugwort above the skin at specific acupuncture points and it helps eliminate disease by warming the Qi and blood. Moxibustion is best suited for weakened or chronic conditions, or when there is cold or dampness obstructing the body's meridians.

Tui Na is a type of Chinese Massage that invigorates the blood, moves the Qi and soothes pain in the muscles and joints. A topical herbal oil may be used directly on the skin. However, this technique is also done over clothing so that the patient need not fully disrobe to obtain the benefits.

Auricular Acupuncture is based on the theory that the ear is a microcosm of the entire body. Specific points and zones represent nearly every aspect of the human body and psyche. It can be used to strengthen the main acupuncture treatment and it is regularly used in cases of chronic pain and in the treatment of addictions of all natures.

Electrical Stimulation uses a small electric current transmitted through the needles into the tissue. This therapy is often used for pain and muscle atrophy.

Deena has been a nationally certified Reflexologist since 2000 and found herself explaining the benefits of her healing art with terms similar to that of Acupuncture. Finally realizing the true gift of this ancient way of healing through her own experience as a patient, she enrolled in the Minnesota College of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, located at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, Minnesota.

In August 2010, she was awarded the degree of Masters of Acupuncture, Magna Cum Laude.

What conditions can acupuncture treat?

The World Health Organization (WHO) currently recognizes more than 40 conditions that can be treated with acupuncture. However, it is important to remember that acupuncture treats the whole person, not just the condition.

Is it safe?

I only use needles that are manufactured and packaged in a sterile environment. The needles are used only once, then safely discarded.

What are the possible side effects?

The most common side effects are local bruising and mild discomfort at insertion site, but these effects are temporary and do not deter the effectiveness of the treatment. While rare, more serious side effects include fainting, needle break, bent needle, or puncture of internal organs.

Where can I get a treatment?

Currently, Deena is seeing familiar patients in the new treatment room in her home. For new patients, she will come directly to your own home or office. Deena is in the process of creating working relationships with various wellness centers and Chiropractic offices in the Twin Cities.
